Time was, I was summoned
From my bed by mercy's call,
Perhaps the urgent need
Of some distressed old man.
Now when I wake and struggle
To throw off the clinging webs
Of dreams that bind me
To some stranger's prior life,
The present batters me aware
To hear the voice of the distressed
Old man, pleading in the night,
And know it is my own.
