It is a great pleasure to review the third edition of this work, having commented on the first edition in 1983. With its companion volume, Viral Infections of Humans: Epidemiology and Control (edited by Evans and Kaslow, fourth edition 1997), it fits neatly at the interface of textbooks on microbiology and infectious diseases. In clear, concise language it describes the microbiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of myriad clinical entities and specific bacterial pathogens.
