Weekend retreats, the cold breath of
   your girlhood home would vanish in
the open of grandma’s farm. She
   joined you in everything: carving
butter on the antique sideboard,
   playing hide-and-seek in the barn,

wading Queen Anne’s lace to the creek
   to dig banks for unruly bait
or tightrope-walk the giant pipes.
   Some days, a treat: making éclairs
in the warming kitchen, flour
   scattered over floor and counter
