This book is the result of the multidisciplinary Obermann Faculty Research Seminar at the University of Iowa, June 1996. The seminar was led by J. Murray, MD, director of the genome center, and R. Weir, PhD, director of the program in biomedical ethics.

The text has three main parts: "Stored Tissue Samples in Specific Clinical and Research Settings" (five essays), "Multidisciplinary Perspectives: History, Biomedical Research, Ethics, and Law" (eight essays), and "Special Issues in the Use of Stored Tissue Samples in Forensic and Military Settings" (four essays).
