Federal agencies have agreed to new proposed regulations aimed at improving the access to and quality of programs that use methadone and similar drugs to treat addiction to heroin and other opioids. The new regulations call for a dramatic shift of federal oversight from direct inspection by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to an accreditation system that emphasizes treatment standards, which will be administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
