Dr Cole is Medical Editor for the JAMA Women's Health Information Center Web site and Contributing Editor, JAMA.
You have been asked by the curriculum chairperson
at your medical school to develop a module on women's health as a second-year
elective for the students. As part of the program you would like to provide
the students with a guide to useful Internet sites. Not an avid "Web searcher,"
you are not sure where to begin.
Women's health encompasses a wide range of topics and cuts across multiple
specialties and disciplines. To examine even a small percentage of women's
health information on the Internet is a daunting prospect. Entering "women's
health" on Yahoo, a popular search engine, resulted in a list of 1617 Web
sites and 28 separate categories for more detailed searching.1
