Treating Adolescent Mental Health Problems Without Medication

JAMA. 2014;312(17):1730. doi:10.1001/jama.2014.13715

Recent research shows that most US adolescents treated for serious emotional or behavioral difficulties don’t receive prescription medication.

In a National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) data brief, investigators reported that in 2010 to 2012, 71% of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years with serious emotional or behavioral problems had received treatment in the previous 6 months that didn’t include medication (Jones LI et al. NCHS Data Brief. 2014;[163]:1-8).
