His was anything but a tranquil life. Full of catastrophic and tragic events, it ended when he was barely 35; one can only guess at what work remained undone. But perhaps the real tragedy lies not so much in the events themselves, but in their effect on his posterity. As in the case of van Gogh or Munch, it is often the tragic events in the life of Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) that initially attract viewers, if only in a kind of morbid fascination (JAMA covers, December 3, 1982, and July 6, 1984). In the end these events serve only to distract viewers from a proper appreciation of his work.
