Byron J. Bailey has few peers when it comes to making academic contributions to the specialty of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery. He has been the Weiss Professor and Chairman, Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston for the past 31 years. During that time, he has served as president of most major otolaryngology societies, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, and the American Laryngological Association. He served on the American Board of Otolaryngology from 1976 until 1995 and was president of that board from 1992 until 1994.
