Rinaldo Enchanted by Armida

JAMA. 2000;283(6):712. doi:10.1001/jama.283.6.712

It was a century that sought the light of reason; he gave it the "lamp of beauty." He turned the ceilings of palaces into blue, sunny skies and peopled them with figures from history and mythology. He is elusive: in the general art surveys of the period he receives the scantest mention; he plays footnote to the vanishing Baroque, gracenote to the rising Rococo. Either way, he is the supporting player rather than the star. Yet perhaps no one of his generation suffused the walls and ceilings of kings, emperors, and princes of the church with more light—and lightness—than he.
