A Simple Observation

JAMA. 2000;283(19):2498. doi:10.1001/jama.283.19.2498

The doctor is balding: wisps of hair spring back across his scalp like stray thoughts. His long white coat hangs open, a half-liter bottle of diet Coke weighing down one pocket, shifting the coat to one side. He doesn't seem to mind the imbalance. As he breezes by the low-walled bunker of the emergency department staff station, the doctor chimes, "Hey, nice tie," to a resident in surf-green scrubs. Before the resident realizes he isn't wearing a tie, the doctor is gone with a gaggle of fresh young medical students in tow. As he walks he scatters comments like change leaking through a hole in the pocket of his white coat.
