Mrs Jones knew she had cervical cancer. Because she knew, she cried
when she met me in the gynecologic clinic at Cook County Hospital. She jumped
when I touched her. Her voice shook as I took her history. After the examination,
she sat with her daughter in the small, stark examining room and listened
to me review the bad news that I agreed with her referring doctor's diagnosis.
She did not seem relieved, however, by the better news I gave her: her cancer
was small, with an excellent chance for cure.
