Any time I open or read a book about the history of medicine, with or without pictorial elements, I feel that the medical giants of the past are close by, whispering advice and showing me the path toward good treatment for my patients. There are so many shadows that follow my own shadow and the shadows of all physicians. Hippocrates and Osler are there.

Julie V. Hansen and Suzanne Porter, the authors of this beautiful book, are both by profession scholars of the history of medical arts and lovers of medical illustration. Hansen is an art historian and Porter a librarian and curator of the History of Medicine Collections of Duke University.
