President Obama in early October signed into law bipartisan legislation to improve postacute care for Medicare beneficiaries and strengthen the program’s oversight of hospice care.
The Improving Medicare Post-Acute Care Transformation Act of 2014 requires data standardization so that Medicare can compare quality across the different postacute care settings, improve discharge planning in hospitals and postacute care settings, and reform payments for postacute care, while ensuring that beneficiaries have access to the most appropriate setting. Postacute care is provided by long-term-care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, skilled nursing facilities, and home health agencies.
