A spate of recent articles in medical journals,1,2 pharmaceutical industry publications,3 and the popular press4 highlight conflicts of interest among investigators, their institutions, and their patients. These articles have drawn attention to the increasingly complex web of financial relationships between corporate sponsors of research and the investigators who perform laboratory research and clinical trials on their behalf.
