Global Mental Health: Its Time Has Come

JAMA. 2001;285(13):1697. doi:10.1001/jama.285.13.1697

In a bid to focus attention on the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness, the World Health Organization (WHO) is launching a year-long mental health campaign. Accordingly, mental health will be the theme for worldwide activities to be held on World Health Day 2001—April 7. This year's slogan in the United States—where events will be held on April 6—is "Open Door, Open Minds." The aim is to raise awareness not only about barriers to mental health but also about solutions that exist to tackle mental and substance abuse disorders. In May, the World Health Assembly, the annual gathering of health ministers from around the world, will feature four roundtable discussions on mental health. Let's look at the development of this historic turn of events.
