The virus. A few threads of DNA. Smaller than a fleck in one of the
hundred eyes of a mosquito. But he was totally unaware of any of this as his
palm swept the bottom of the sock drawer, groping blindly among the loose
quarters and candy wrappers and abandoned LifeSavers for the thing he hoped
he would not find. The syringe was buttressed against the far corner of the
drawer and the needle plunged deep beneath his skin and scraped against his
knuckle. For an electric moment all movement in his hand stopped as the signal
of pain snapped through his arm and spinal cord to his brain. This took but
a fraction of a moment, long enough for his face to burn and his lips and
eyelids to perspire before he even realized why.
