Suicide Prevention Plan Calls for Physicians' Help

Washington—Each year, some 30 000 people in the United States take their own lives and another 650 000 attempt to do so. To reduce these losses, Surgeon General David Satcher, MD, PhD, recently released the nation's first coordinated suicide prevention strategy, a broad public health–oriented plan that calls for increased awareness, reduced stigma associated with mental health care, and a host of new community-based programs.
