Black and white, a great ice cream of a Holstein
jumps the Humpty Dumpty moon that beams
above our little star fish
asleep within a winking blinking sea
the suited doctors step in to chart
then drift down the hall where the laughing Candy
Stripers gather, and the dish
and the spoon run like eloping lovers away.
Wishes are not horses we ride; not gods
nor Good Folk come to make one grim thing bright
though we wait. Hush-a-bye my fey heart
and bone: this fish, our star, sleeps on,
perhaps dreams, swaddled in pink and night
and sprouting tubes like tiny lightning rods.
