I presided over both of their deaths, but the situations were so very different. Mr Stuart collapsed while square dancing at the senior center. I was on call in the emergency department (ED) when he was brought in. Our resuscitative attempts were unsuccessful, and I met his widow for the first time as I gave her the bad news.

At my request, Mrs Stuart came to see me at my office about 3 weeks later. I had developed the routine of requesting a follow-up visit after a patient died to see if the survivor had questions about the events surrounding the death and to see how she or he was coping with grief.
