The Senate voted to confirm Mark B. McClellan, MD, PhD, as the new director of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although he has no regulatory experience, McClellan most recently served as a member of President Bush's Council of Economic Advisors, helping the administration form health care policies.
At his hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, McClellan vowed to speed approval of new drugs and devices while maintaining a commitment to health and safety.
