The Nuclear Threat Initiative (a charitable organization working to
reduce the threats from nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons) and the
World Health Organization (WHO) have formed a fund to ensure a prompt global
response to infectious disease outbreaks, whether naturally occurring or from
the intentional release of biological agents.
Until the fund of $500 000 was established, there were no contingency
funds available to allow WHO to respond immediately to an infectious disease
threat. With the new fund, which is intended to be replenished by WHO member-states
and nongovernmental organizations, teams can be on the ground to provide medical
experts and equipment within 24 hours of an outbreak.
