Time slows, the clock hands
almost still
against a glowing face.
Quiet night air
sits heavy on my eyes, the
gears of my wakeful mind
a spinning lathe
making toothpicks to
prop drooping lids.
Shadowed rooms
glow dimly
in the moonlight.
The hours
lay on one another
like children's blocks,
keeping sleep outside.
The pages
I use to quiet my mind
fade in and out
of focus until I wake
to realize sleep has slipped
silently through the gray back
door of morning,
like a wet blanket
thrown on a smoldering fire,
a trick in the dark.
