My dad was Jesse E. Kruse. He was a grocery man. He made sure the bananas
received the proper exposure to carbon dioxide so they were flawless when
they went to the store. He made sure the coffee beans were roasted to perfection.
Watermelons percussed to precisely the correct ripeness. Otherwise he would
not buy them for his stores. He cared about his customers. They knew he cared.
Before that, my dad was an Army man. He believed what his hero General
George Patton said: "A man standing by his convictions can turn the tide of
many." Yes, indeed.
