Colossal Colon Cruises Country

JAMA. 2003;289(15):1912. doi:10.1001/jama.289.15.1912

Washington—Outside a carnival tent, a young girl approaches passersby and tries to persuade them to crawl through a giant colon.

"It's not totally gross," she says. "It's kind of realistic, but it isn't real."

If it were real, the 40-foot-long curved tube of plywood and polyurethane would be truly alarming. Besides its improbable size, the tunnel features realistic depictions of early and advanced malignancies, polyps, and diverticulosis, all modeled from structures seen on colonoscopy .
