Alice's Husband

JAMA. 2003;289(18):2333. doi:10.1001/jama.289.18.2333

The image of her missing face remains with me 25 years later. And the loving care her husband gave her represents a degree of commitment I have not seen in my 30 years of practice.

Alice was referred to me for evaluation of a nodule that showed up on a chest film taken by her internist. She was in her 60s and suffered from a disease that was diabolically disfiguring. For years she required repeated resections of parts of her face because of a progressive necrotizing, inflammatory process that destroyed her orbits, sinuses, and nose. Bilateral enucleation was eventually required.
