As the epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) continued
to widen in April, health agencies such as the WHO and governments were taking
measures to curb its spread. As of April 24, 4439 probable cases of SARS with
263 deaths had been reported to the WHO from 26 countries, including 2422
cases in China, 1488 cases in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
of China, 192 cases in Singapore, and 140 cases in Canada.
