I met Anabel on our first day of internship. I remember it with that
strange clarity of beginnings, the hyperesthesia induced by fear and newness.
We were lingering in a hallway at Hillside, the county hospital and trauma
center, new interns trying to get a sense of the place and each other. She
was still wearing her Boston suit while James—another of our soon-to-be
friends—tried to explain to her that in Seattle it is okay to wear Birkenstocks
to work. That was the beginning, standing around in a hallway at Harborview
talking about Birkenstocks.
