Companies Warned About Unproven SARS Treatments

JAMA. 2003;289(21):2787. doi:10.1001/jama.289.21.2787-a

Thirty-eight states have asked Congress to reject legislation amending the Employee Retirement Income Security Act that would allow small businesses to form association health plans (AHPs), a type of insurance pool exempt from state regulation.

The AHPs could then purchase insurance at a discount much like large companies that self-insure. Supporters maintain that the measure would help control health care costs and reduce the number of uninsured US residents. Opponents say that the bill would lead to poor quality health plans.
