The new edition of Principles and Practice of Pediatric Infectious Diseases is palpable and timely testimony to the pleasures of a good book. It is also an antidote to the oft-stated, toxic sentiment that the electronic retrieval of information will replace paper publication.

This second edition, produced six years after the first, generally adheres to the editors' goal of providing an authoritative reference primarily for those who practice pediatric infectious diseases. It is comprehensive but not encyclopedic. Refreshingly, most of the prior volume's foibles—shared by numerous first editions—have been rectified.
