Janet Rehnquist, former inspector general of the Department of Health
and Human Services (DHHS), has been rebuked by a report from the General Accounting
Office, the investigational arm of Congress, published on June 10.
The report said that Rehnquist, who stepped down from the position on
June 1, undermined the independence of the office and created an "atmosphere
of anxiety and mistrust" in her 2 years as head of the office, which is charged
with investigating Medicare fraud and other misappropriation of federal funds.
