A new alliance of public and private sector partners, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), was launched last month to help developing countries implement locally developed food fortification programs to eliminate micronutrient deficiencies (http://www.gainhealth.org/). Such deficiencies, especially in vitamin A, iron, folic acid, and iodine are associated with such problems as birth defects, impaired physical and mental development, blindness, and increased susceptibility to infections.
