A new alliance of public and private sector partners, the Global Alliance
for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), was launched last month to help developing
countries implement locally developed food fortification programs to eliminate
micronutrient deficiencies (http://www.gainhealth.org/). Such deficiencies,
especially in vitamin A, iron, folic acid, and iodine are associated with
such problems as birth defects, impaired physical and mental development,
blindness, and increased susceptibility to infections.
