Report: Restructure NIH

JAMA. 2003;290(7):880. doi:10.1001/jama.290.7.880-a

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) should develop a cohesive vision of its role in advancing medicine, promote more innovative research, and take steps to insulate itself from politics, concludes a new report from the Institute of Medicine.

Under the recommendations, clinical research would be consolidated into a new center. By integrating on-campus and off-campus research programs, the center would facilitate the dissemination of new clinical knowledge, write the authors of the report, Enhancing the Vitality of the National Institutes of Health: Organizational Change to Meet New Challenges (http://www.nap.edu/catalog/10779.html).
