In Reply: In response to Drs Luh and Karnath,
reanalysis of the FDA database by individual antibiotics demonstrates that
clarithromycin, azithromycin, and erythromycin are all associated with statin-associated
rhabdomyolysis. Clarithromycin was associated with 3.2% of cases of statin-associated
myopathy, azithromycin with 2.1%, and erythromycin with 1.8% in the FDA database
from November 1997 through March 2000. The respective associations were 1.8%,
0.5%, and 0.6% of cases from January 1990 through March 2002.
