Seeking the origin of modern art is a complex and fascinating pursuit that can engage the physician and scientist. Art is most likely the result of a unique interplay of neurocognitive mechanisms.1 The need for art may lie in the very process of evolution, while its personal expression might be affected, as in de Kooning's last works, by psychic and physical illness.2
