Protecting America's Health is a history of the slow and painful rise of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to become the world's quintessential consumer watchdog agency. The book explains many mysteries of the drug industry and the pressures to which doctors, researchers, and publishers are subject. Charlatan doctors and a somewhat reactionary American Medical Association take their hits. The book is well written from a consumer-advocate viewpoint by an experienced health reporter for the New York Times and the Washington Post.
