To the Editor: In his Clinical Crossroads article, Dr Gonzales1 discussed the common scenario of a patient demanding antibiotics for acute respiratory infection (ARI). One difficulty in the management of ARIs is making a diagnosis. Rapid viral diagnostic tests are now available for a number of respiratory viruses, although their role in assessment and management of patients with ARI remains unclear.
