To the Editor: In his Clinical Crossroads article,
Dr Gonzales1 discussed the common scenario
of a patient demanding antibiotics for acute respiratory infection (ARI).
One difficulty in the management of ARIs is making a diagnosis. Rapid viral
diagnostic tests are now available for a number of respiratory viruses, although
their role in assessment and management of patients with ARI remains unclear.
