Every major specialty is proud of its growth, development, and progress. Obstetrics and gynecology has seen particularly remarkable advances during the last 50 years. The Green Journal shows that knowledgeable and caring obstetricians and gynecologists have improved maternity statistics and postpartum health, a major factor in helping women to live longer than men and to have healthier babies and a more comfortable old age.

Dr Roy M. Pitkin, editor from 1968 to 2001 of Obstetrics & Gynecology, a monthly scientific journal published by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, has produced a historical profile of "The Green Journal," as it is known, in honor of the journal's 50th anniversary. The Green Journal describes and discusses seminal articles, selected by Dr Pitkin, on a good number of interesting medical innovations that first appeared in its pages.
