Having the opportunity to read the personal memoirs of Allen O. Whipple was quite a surprise. The recently published book History of the Pancreas, by John M. Howard and Walter Hess (Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishing, 2002),1 made reference to these previously unpublished memoirs, but so many years after Whipple's passing, I did not expect them ever to be published.
