The subject of the 1997 Academy Award–winning documentary Breathing Lessons, the author of How I Became a Human Being provided a moving chronicle of his struggles to become independent and of his achievements after paralysis and lifelong respirator dependency. His successes included receipt of a doctoral degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1990. Before his death in 1999, at age 49 years, he produced a body of published work as a poet and a journalist using a mouthstick to type each word.
