In December, the Senate passed a bill authorizing $60 million in grants
to schools, public health departments, and other groups for programs that
encourage exercise and healthy eating. A House of Representatives version
of the bill is currently under discussion in a subcommittee.
Programs for training primary care physicians and other health professionals
to identify, treat, and prevent obesity are eligible for funding, as are efforts
that provide bicycle paths, encourage grocery stores to offer healthy foods,
and promote the development of educational materials.
