"But Paul Farmer is only 40 years old!" exclaimed a colleague when I mentioned that I was reviewing Tracy Kidder's biography, Mountains Beyond Mountains. Indeed, Dr Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health (PIH), a Boston-based not-for-profit, and chair of the Department of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities at Brigham and Women's Hospital, is a young man. Biographies of people his age typically recount the lives of pop stars, internationally acclaimed athletes, or the dead-before-their-time. Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, is none of those.
