Stem Cell–Derived Organoids Are Functional in Vivo

JAMA. 2014;312(21):2202. doi:10.1001/jama.2014.16230

Scientists who previously generated intestinal tissue from induced pluripotent stem cells in vitro now show that these 3-dimensional organ-like structures, or organoids, are functional when transplanted into immunocompromised mice (Watson CL et al. Nat Med. doi:10.1038/nm.3737 [published online October 19, 2014]). The organoids could also be generated from embryonic stem cells, according to the team led by investigators at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
