To the Editor: Dr Gruen and colleagues1 encouraged physicians to take a more active role
in public affairs relating to the health of their patients and the communities
in which they live. This view is similar to other recent efforts to define
the roles and responsibilities of epidemiologists and other public health
professionals, some of whom are also physicians.2,3
