To the Editor: In his Editorial about clinician-researchers,
Dr Snyderman1 did not discuss educational
loan debt, which may be a powerful disincentive to choosing a career in academic
clinical investigation. Unlike comparable PhD graduates, many young physician-researchers
accrue educational debt beyond 6 figures,2 and
deferments and forbearances may cease within residency or fellowship training.
