I was in cynical mode when I started to read this book. The title seemed odd and did not tell me that the book was almost entirely about influenza in the United States, perhaps covering much the same ground as Crosby's classic America's Forgotten Pandemic: The Influenza of 1918 and Gina Kolata's Flu: The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus That Caused It. So why spend 7 years, I asked myself, writing a book on a subject well dug over?
