The 11th edition of Krugman's Infectious Diseases
of Children is a testimony to the pleasures of long-term relationships
and a worthy model of generally excellent medical writing. For more than 30
years, this reviewer has charted the progress of pediatric infectious diseases
using this textbook as an invaluable compass.
The current edition continues to present a synthesis of the natural
history, diagnosis, and treatment of the major infections afflicting children.
However, the scope has been expanded to provide a more global perspective
than previously. New chapters on cholera, dengue, malaria, and helminthic
infections have been added; the chapter on smallpox has been updated and expanded;
and a brief discussion of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is provided
as an appendix.
