Iodine Deficiency

JAMA. 2004;291(23):2809. doi:10.1001/jama.291.23.2809-a

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is seeking to eliminate iodine deficiency in the Americas by 2005 through universal consumption of iodized salt, health officials announced last month at a meeting in Lima, Peru. The initiative is part of a global campaign to eliminate the problem, which affects millions worldwide and is the greatest single cause of preventable brain damage and mental retardation (http://www.who.int/nut/idd.htm).
