WHO Meeting Targets AIDS, Other Issues

JAMA. 2004;292(1):27-28. doi:10.1001/jama.292.1.27

Geneva—The AIDS pandemic and access to care for those infected with HIV was a major focus of the 57th World Health Assembly, which met here in May. This annual meeting of delegates of the 192 member states of the United Nations' World Health Organization (WHO) also considered such issues as the growing problem of obesity and diet-related diseases.

WHO Director-General Jong-Wook Lee, MD, MPH, who was near the end of his first year in the job, promised to emphasize HIV/AIDS and specifically committed WHO to the "3 by 5 strategy" of working to get 3 million individuals with HIV in developing countries access to antiretroviral treatment by the end of 2005.
