FDA Tobacco Regulation

JAMA. 2004;292(2):163. doi:10.1001/jama.292.2.163-b

Public health organizations are throwing their weight behind identical Senate and House of Representatives bills that would grant the FDA authority to regulate tobacco products.

The American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, American Lung Association, and Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids worked closely with members of Congress to fashion the legislation.

Tobacco use remains the nation's leading preventable cause of death. At press time, the bills were awaiting committee approval before moving to floor debate.
